Something in the Breeze

It was a sun-filled day in early spring, with the sun being warm, but not hot quite yet. But warm enough to excite nature and bring spring even more firmly into the season. It had been a mild winter, but the spring had been almost hiding for most of the month, since the last of the snows had melted. Now, the trees were starting to bud, and flowers were blooming, though slowly.

Jared walked along the boardwalk of the Pier, looking out over the expanse of the ocean. Its glittering blue sparkled out on the horizon to the east. He was rather happy with the way the wind was gently blowing, compared to the last few days of the Nor’easter that had blasted the little island town of Gull Bay. He could see all the driftwood and debris on the shore lying about, but it was not unexpected. People would be picking over those treasures, or high-tide would come to claim some of it and sink it to the murky depths eventually.

His look was a fashion statement, of sorts, similar to one of his J-rock crushes, and he was dressed in white, mostly, a white linen jacket over a pink henley, unbuttoned down the neck to his breast bone. He had white jeans and had rolled up his jacket’s sleeves to display his arms, the colorful and juvenile tattoos were something he got a lot of enjoyment out of, and he watched the interplay of muscle and veins underneath the skin as he flexed his fingers and wrist to make the tattoos move.

He fingered the pendant that dangled from his neck. It had a fragile silver chain, and a ruby-like stone that lay against his chest. He seemed a little distracted, and couldn’t help but toy with the snakebite piercings, sliding his tongue over the smooth metal. His ears were shaped exotically, and pierced, partly hidden behind the messy mass of his brown, styled hair. And in the front, his bangs came down over one eye, his right, revealing only his startling blue orb, gazing out at the world.

Jared seemed to have an almost dream-like quality to his gaze, and the way he carried himself, as if he were drifting through the sights and sounds and smells of the Pier. He wore no shoes, going barefoot, and he wasn’t concerned. The warm boardwalk felt good on his naked feet, and he simply continued to follow it, occasionally stopping to watch the joggers, the tourists, and the other folks that enjoyed the beach on a warm spring day. Dandelion seeds, that white drifting fluffy pods were blowing in from the land breeze and the bars of sand where many had taken root and spang up over the last few days. They filled the air with their lazy drifting selves, and it made Jared smile.

When he came to a giant prop of a Soda bottle, with an equally giant straw sticking out of the top, Jared seemed almost alarmed, glancing around, hearing it fizz like it was some kind of ticking time bomb. But after a few minutes, the lackadaisical young man laughed and pointed at the soda bottle like it were some clown at the circus, before he turns and leaned his back against it.

“You look rather picturesque, standing there, eh?” A voice from the hot dog stand, or near it, came, with an amused sound to the voice.

Jared turned and his single visible blue eye settled on the figure of a young man with long blond tresses, that came down almost to mid-spine, pulled back in a ponytail with beads braided in at his temples and with a curl that was wrapped around his ponytail in the back. He had a seashell necklace tight to his neck, and similar bracelets on his wrist. Silver studs glinted at his earlobes, and his tongue was pierced.

He was lean and handsome, with a dark brown eyes and a cast to his features that made him somewhat Asian at a guess. He was wearing a surfer’s wetsuit and had a body board leaning against the wall next to him. He was barefoot, and sipping on a drink with lots of ice in it – perhaps a iced tea or an iced coffee? Jared could tell the lean man was self assured, just with the subtle way he moved his body. He had a toothy smile and he wiggled his eyebrows at Jared when he glanced over.

“Well, thank you- I think,” the young brunette said, as he crossed his arms over his chest, and gave the surfer a look. “Kind of early in the year to be surfing out there, isn’t it? The water has to be freezing!”

The young surfer flashed a grin and shook his head, “Only if you get swamped a lot. But I’m pretty cozy in my wetsuit, dude.” He chuckled and sipped on his drink more. He had this lithe sexuality about him that was like a flashlight in the dark, and the boy probably didn’t even know he shimmered with it. “I just wondered if you would mind me snapping a pic of you against that bottle. You just look so … refreshing that way. “ He gave Jared a lopsided grin.

Jared shrugged, uncrossing his arms and leaning back against the bottle, his hands going to this thighs, as the young man pulled out a smartphone and started to snap pictures.

“Oh I’m Jaddua, by the way,” The surfer said, as he swaggered up to Jared, extending his hand. The younger man took the proffered hand and squeezed it without trying to overmatch the athletic boy’s grip.

“It’s good to know you, Jaddua. Do you just hang out at the Pier all day, and make passes at all the boys that wander by this hot dog stand.. Which, by the way, screams ‘compensation’.

Jaddua frowned a moment, then his face lit up and his eyes sparkled in the sunlight with humor, and he started a hearty laugh, “Oh gods! Hahah” he said, as he turned a circle.

Jared didn’t think it was THAT funny, but Jaddua’s humor seemed genuine.

“Oh, that was good! I can see it! I’m sure there’s more guys making footlong references that would need more than a few of themselves to add up for that. “ He chuckled a little more then shook his head. “Nah, I’m just really loving these iced mochas.. They’re so tastee!” he sipped at the last of his drink and tossed the plastic cup into the trash bin nearby. It was at least a 10 foot throw, and it went into the basket like he was standing immediately beside it. “3 points,” the blond said, as he grinned back at Jared.

“Well, I wish you luck with the waves,” Jared said, as he pushed off the soda bottle, and started to wander down the Pier again, his eyes straying back to the surfer boy. He rolled his eyes and just kept on walking, thinking the young surfer was way too full of himself.

But he hasn’t been hard on the eyes either, Jared thought.

“Whatcha thinking about?”

The voice was Jaddua’s and it was right beside Jared. He glanced over, startled, and there he was. The graceful surfer boy, walking almost silently right beside him. “Wow, you can move like a ninja when you want to, huh?” Jared said that in a voice that sounded impressed.

Jaddua crinkled his brow, and then shook his head, “Nah, I never wanted to be a Ninja. I just love Martial Arts movies though. I took Karate when I was in school, too.. “

“No, I meant you moved very quietly when you snuck up beside me just now. “ Jared stopped and turned towards the young man, and put his hands on his hips.

“I wasn’t trying to scare you, if that’s what you mean. I’m just light on my feet. Like a jungle cat!”

“Well, Jungle cat, you impressed me. Now – why are you following me?” Jared was rather direct – though not unfriendly.

Jaddua frowned a moment, that sunbeam smile of his eclipsed like he’d just been asked to explain something obvious. “You looked like you could use a friend, out here today. Is there something troubling you? You almost look a little lost, to be honest. “

Jared shook his head, and sighed, “No, I’m just out here collecting my thoughts. I didn’t lose someone, nor did I have a traumatic episode I’m trying to forget. It’s just a nice day, and I love this beach. I can think out here, and plan what my next move is. I’m an artist, so .. I like this atmosphere for .. project planning. “

Jaddua’s eyes widened, and then he nodded, ‘Ohh.. oh.. Ok! I get you! Well, I’ll leave you to it then. I don’t want to intrude. “ With that, the tall, handsome surfer started to back away, and turned towards the way he had come.

“Wait.”

Joshua’s voice was urgent, but not angry. “Wait.” he trotted up to Jaddua, and smiled. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean for you to go. I was just .. rather rude I suppose. If you want to, we can walk and talk for a while.. “

Jaddua paused and nodded slowly, his smile returning. “I’d like that, bro, “ he said with a chuckle, turning back towards the direction Jared originally had been walking on the boardwalk.

Maybe it was just something in the breeze, or maybe their meeting had been fated, but Jared liked the gregarious surfer, and found that he could use the company. The two boys became fast friends that day. But the story doesn’t end there. It’s only just beginning.
